about

Both of these songs are from what was to be the next Talking Mountain record, which I started working on immediately following the release of the last record, "Mysterious Knowledge/Unknown Colors." One (Trees & Caves) was to be the first track, and the other (Your Brains Must Have Leaked Out) is a reworking of an older Talking Mountain song, meant to more appropriately suit the song.

Somewhere along the line, a band from somewhere else (Denver?) emailed me looking for someone to book them a show. They used synthesizers and described themselves as "Electrosensual." They thought Talking Mountain would be a good fit. I thought I would throw up.

Though the live shows were always presented using electronic boxes, and there was certainly heavy synthesizer use, The albums were, for the most part, played and not programmed. Almost every recorded synth track has had an acoustic guitar or electric bass doubling it that was played by a human. Drum machine drums were pounded out with fingers and looped because I'm bad at programming.

The thought of being "Electrosensual" has killed any interest I had in finishing the record, despite it being mostly done, and also despite it being not terribly synth heavy or "danceable." Calm Fur/Feel Tight is now the focus.

Track Name: Trees & Caves
I looked through all the books for the stories of the Witches Cauldron,
And I stood in the woods at the foot of the tallest mountain.
All I saw were trees and caves.

The leaves shook softly in the breeze
As a branch reached out for my clothes.
A cave whispered to me as eyes stared right through me
From the back of its throat.
All I heard was, “Walk away.”

Just let me pass.
I’ve got no question to ask.
I just want to look inside and scream.

In the dim light I felt for my limbs, but I couldn’t feel anything.
In the distance snow fell and a ghost floated up from a shallow grave,
And it howled, “We’re the same!”
My fingers unfurled and curled into the soil of the mountainside.
My ribs hinged open and formed a little doorway to a different life,
And I realized we’re all trees and caves.
Track Name: Your Brains Must Have Leaked Out
She's got another guys name carved in her wrist,
And tattooed lists of the boys she's kissed
On the insides of her thighs.
A hundred other guys.
Don't look at her face,
And don't look in her eyes.

She's going to rip your heart out with a length of wire.
Fashioned into a hook,
And inserted through your face.
Like the Egyptians removed brains.
All your blood will drain away,
And you will never be the same.

Your brains must have leaked out,
Through a hole in your skull.
I think I see them tangled in your hair.
Because you think that you're happy,
because you think she,
Thinks about you when you aren't there.

She bought a knife at the thrift store,
Just for cutting out hearts.
She had a rusty one before.
"Does she still have it?"
I'm not sure,
but she's still taking boys apart
In the backseat of her car.
